Anniversary Celebration - 35 years of PNO
Aktuell befinden wir uns im Jubiläumsjahr. Doch bis zum eigentlichen Geburtstag vergeht noch etwas Zeit. Daher möchten wir Sie an der Historie der PNO teilhaben lassen.
We are currently in our anniversary year. But there is still some time to go before the actual anniversary. We would therefore like to share the history of the PNO with you.
2009 - 2014
„Share our vision for automation“ - Der Informationsaustausch zwischen den regionalen PROFIBUS Organisationen (RPA) ist ein zentraler Marktvorteil des internationalen Innovationsnetzwerks PI und unterstreicht die internationale Gemeinschaft, die an neuen Visionen arbeitet. „You are not alone“ – ist gelebte Praxis der 26 RPA’s, 42 Competence Center als auch der mittlerweile global aufgestellten 16 PI Trainings Center in 2009.
Der internationale Erfolg zeigt sich auch im Erfolg bei der Normung der PI-Technologien in China. Die PNO/PI und die Chinesische PROFIBUS Association (CPA) können sowohl PROFINET IO als auch PROFIdrive 2010 auf nationaler Ebene als Norm verabschieden.
Bei der 3. PI-Konferenz 2013 in Düsseldorf schaffte es Comedian Bernhard Hoëcker - zwar nicht vom Fach - eines der Kernthemen zu berühren. Originalton: „Wenn man einen Techy trifft, empfehle ich immer nach der Softwareversion zu fragen. Und dann betroffen zu antworten: Oh die alte. Das wirkt immer!“ Wart ihr dabei?
„Fliegen lernen mit PROFINET“ – Dies verdeutlichte das Papierflieger-Modell als Messehighlight ab 2014, welches in Zusammenarbeit mit der TU Darmstadt erstellt wurde und anschaulich die Funktionsweisen der Technologien zeigt. Aus einem einfachen Blatt Papier, das personalisiert bedruckt werden kann, wird durch spezielle Falt- und Wendemechanismen ein präzises Flugobjekt. Wer erinnert sich noch daran?
In diesem Jahrfünft wird das Thema Industrie 4.0 immer präsenter – auch bei der PNO. In dieser Forschungsinitiative sollen die IT-Welt, die Automatisierung und der Maschinenbau zusammenkommen, um neue Ideen und Fertigungsprozesse anzustoßen. Ein Beispiel sind etwa Komponenten, die selbstständig Fehler und Wartungsbedarf anmelden und die Behebung anstoßen, um etwa weitere Schäden in der Anlage zu vermeiden und die Reparatur zu veranlassen.
"Share our vision for automation" - The exchange of information between the regional PROFIBUS organisations (RPA) is a key market advantage of the innovative PI network and underlines the international community working on new visions. "You are not alone" - is the lived practice of 26 RPAs, 42 Competence Centres and 16 PI Training Centres in 2009, which now have a global presence.
The international triumph is also reflected in the success of the standardisation of PI technologies in China. The PNO/PI and the Chinese PROFIBUS Association (CPA) were able to adopt both PROFINET IO and PROFIdrive as national standards in 2010.
At the 3rd „PI-Konferenz“ 2013 in Düsseldorf, Germany, comedian Bernhard Hoëcker - although not a professional - managed to touch on one of the core topics. Original quote: "When you meet a techy, I always recommend asking for the software version. And then answer with a concerned smile: 'Oh, the old one. That always works!" Were you there?
"Learning to fly with PROFINET" - this was illustrated by the paper aeroplane model as a trade fair highlight from 2014, which was created in collaboration with TU Darmstadt and clearly demonstrates how the technologies work. A simple sheet of paper, which can be printed in a personalised way, is transformed into a precise flying object using special folding and turning mechanisms. Who remembers that?
This five years, the topic of „Industrie 4.0“ is becoming more and more present - also at the PNO. This research initiative aims to bring together the worlds of IT, automation and mechanical engineering to initiate new ideas and manufacturing processes. One example is components that independently report faults and maintenance requirements and initiate repairs in order to prevent further damage to the system and initiate repairs.
2004 - 2009
Erst 1999 auf der HMI vorgestellt, hat sich 2003 PROFIsafe bereits am Markt etabliert und wird 2007 internationaler Standard (IEC 61784-3-3. PROFIdrive und PROFIsafe ergänzen sich, sodass eine harmonische Einheit entsteht, mit der die Sicherheitsfunktionen zusammen mit Standard- Antriebsfunktionen über den gleichen Bus angesteuert werden können. 2006 starteten 21 Firmen innerhalb eines Arbeitskreises der PNO die Spezifikationsarbeiten zum IO-Link-Standard, die im September 2013 im internationalen Standard IEC 61131-9 mündeten. Zur Markteinführung in 2009 waren schon 41 Mitgliedsfirmen an Bord der IO-Link Community.
Im Jahr 2006 wird der Name des internationalen Industrieverbandes zu POFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) erweitert, ohne das Kürzel PI zu verändern. Zudem wurde im selben Jahr mit der Gründung der PI Training Center begonnen. Die Motivation für ein standardisiertes Energieeffizienzprofil geht von der AIDA (Automatisierungsinitiative Deutscher Automobilhersteller) aus. 2009 hat der gegründete Arbeitskreis die Spezifikation erarbeitet und veröffentlicht PROFIenergy. 2009 konnte die deutsche (und vor allem erste) PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation e.V. (PNO) ihr 20jähriges Bestehen feiern. Die PNO gibt zu diesem freudigen Anlass sogar einen Jubliäumsband heraus und startet mit der Veranstaltungsreihe PI-Konferenz, die zukünftig im 2-Turnus abgehalten werden soll. PROFIBUS ist ein Gemeinschaftswerk, an dem viele engagierte Fachleute aus aller Welt kollaborativ vernetzt ihren Anteil haben. Jeder einzelne Mitarbeiter hat einen maßgeblichen Beitrag zum Erfolg dieses Projektes geleistet.
Zudem hat im Jubiläumsjahr das Verbandslogo eine Modernisierung erfahren und erhält seine typische Farbgebung.

First presented at the HMI #hmi in 1999, PROFIsafe had already established itself on the market by 2003 and became an international standard in 2007 (IEC 61784-3-3). PROFIdrive and PROFIsafe complement each other, creating a harmonious unit that can be used to control the safety functions together with standard drive functions via the same bus. In 2006, 21 companies started specification work on the IO-Link standard within a PNO working group, which resulted in the international standard IEC 61131-9 in September 2013. By the time of the market launch in 2009, 41 member companies were already on board the IO-Link community. In 2006, the name of the international industry association was changed to POFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) without changing the abbreviation PI. In addition, the PI Training Centre was founded in the same year.
The motivation for a standardised energy efficiency profile comes from the AIDA (Automation Initiative of German Automobile Manufacturers). In 2009, the established working group developed and published the specification of PROFIemergy. In 2009, the German (and above all the first) PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation e.V. (PNO) celebrated its 20th anniversary. The PNO is even publishing a jubilee publication to mark the occasion and launching the „PI-Konferenz“, which will be held every two years in future. PROFIBUS is a joint endeavour in which many committed experts from all over the world have played their part in a collaborative network. Every single employee has made a significant contribution to the success of this project.
In the anniversary year, the association's logo has also been modernised and given its typical colour scheme.

1999 - 2004
Das nächste Jahrfünft steht ganz im Zeichen von PROFINET. 2000 sondiert ein Lenkungskreis die Potentiale von Ethernet und im selben Jahr wird PROFINET als Standard vorgestellt. Es ergänzt die bewährte PROFIBUS Technologie für solche Anwendungen, bei denen schnelle Datenkommunikation und die Nutzung industrieller IT-Funktionen gefordert wird.
Seit 2002 ist diese Technologie Teil der Norm IEC 61158. Zudem wird 2002 das erste PROFINET-Zertifikat an Hilscher ausgestellt. Auch wird das erste PROFINET Competence Center und Testlabor gegründet. Ein weiterer Meilenstein in der Geschichte der PNO ist 2004 die Entscheidung der AIDA (Automatisierungsinitiative der deutschen Automobilhersteller) für den Einsatz von PROFINET.
2007 waren „erst“ 1,1 Mio. PROFINET-Knoten installiert - doch Ende des Jahres 2008 waren mehr 1,6 Mio. Geräte im Markt (Wachstum 40%!). PROFINET ist damit Marktführer Ethernet basierter industrieller Kommunikation in Deutschland!
Auch die Community der PI wächst zunehmend. CERn wird als 1.000. Mitglied des internationalen Verbundes vorgestellt und es existieren mittlerweile 22 RPA’s weltweit. 2003 konnten zudem über 10 Mio. installierte PROFIBUS-Knoten weltweit gezählt werden – wir sind somit globaler Marktführer.
Eine ganz entscheidende Säule des Markterfolges von PROFIBUS und PROFINET ist das herausragende Qualitäts- und Zertifizierungswesen der PNO. Ziel ist es, dem Anwender die notwendige Sicherheit beim Vernetzen von Geräten unterschiedlicher Hersteller zu geben. Die Geräte sollen sich konform zur Spezifikation verhalten, was mehrere Firmen und Institute als herstellerneutrale akkreditierte Prüflabore gewährleisten.
The next five years are characterised by PROFINET. In 2000, a steering committee explores the potential of Ethernet and PROFINET is introduced as a standard in the same year. It supplements the proven PROFIBUS technology for applications that require fast data communication and the use of industrial IT functions.
This technology has been part of the IEC 61158 standard since 2002, and the first PROFINET certificate is issued to Hilscher in 2002. The first PROFINET Competence Center and Test Laboratory is also founded this year. Another milestone in the history of the PNO is the decision of the AIDA (Automation Initiative of German Automobile Manufacturers) in favour of the use of PROFINET in 2004.
In 2007, "only" 1.1 million PROFINET nodes were installed - but by the end of 2008, there were more than 1.6 million devices on the market (growth of 40%!). This makes PROFINET the market leader in Ethernet-based industrial communication in Germany!
The PI community is also growing. CERn is presented as the 1,000th member of the international network and there are now 22 RPAs worldwide. In 2003, more than 10 million PROFIBUS nodes were installed worldwide - making us the global market leader.
A crucial pillar of the market success of PROFIBUS and PROFINET is the PNO's outstanding quality and certification system. The aim is to provide users with the necessary security when networking devices from different manufacturers. The devices should conform to the specification, which is guaranteed by several companies and institutes as manufacturer-neutral accredited test laboratories.
1994 - 1999
Die PNO war und ist ein Technologietreiber! In den Arbeitskreisen/Fachausschüssen erarbeiteten die Mitglieder schon in den 90er Jahren gemeinsame Problemlösungen und konnten so entscheidenden Einfluss auf die konsequente Weiterentwicklung der Technologie nehmen. Zusätzlicher wirtschaftlicher und technologischer Nutzen wird durch das umfangreiche Dienstleistungsangebot in den Bereichen Marketing, Technik und Schulung erzielt.
1992 wurden die ersten Prüflabore für PROFIBUS etabliert. Die auf den Testergebnissen dieser PITLs basierende Zertifizierung war notwendig, um die hohe Qualität der offenen Kommunikationsstandards und Interoperabilität nachhaltig zu gewährleisten. Feldbusgeräte mussten sicher miteinander kommunizieren können – egal von welchem Hersteller sie kamen!
Schon 1994 begann die Integration des PROFIdrive e.V. in die PNO, denn auch im Antriebsbereich brauchte man Bussysteme. Die Punkt-zu-Punkt-Kopplungen waren viel zu langsam – mit PROFIdrive wollten wir außerdem den wachsenden Informationsbedarf stillen.
Am 1. November 1995 folgte in Düsseldorf der offizielle Zusammenschluss aller RPA´s zum internationalen Dachverband PROFIBUS International (PI) – noch ohne PROFINET!
1995 hat PROFIBUS sich als Marktführer in Europa etabliert und auch die Mitgliederzahl wächst zunehmend - mit Krohne wurde das 250. Mitglied offiziell begrüßt!
Die PNO nimmt zunehmend die Rolle des international führenden Industrieverbandes der Automatisierungstechnik wahr und feierte ihren 10. Geburtstag mit Prof. Dr. Heinz Riesenhuber, Bundesminister für Forschung und Technologie a.D.
Mit der Norm (IEC 61158) von 1998, in der alle Feldbusse integriert werden sollten, kam es zum Ende des internationalen „Feldbuskrieges“ und zum Durchbruch in Form eines Kompromisses zwischen den wichtigsten Akteuren (u. a. Fieldbus Foundation, Fisher Rosemount, ControlNet International, PNO und Siemens)! Aufgrund dieser Erfahrungen wurde die erste Version des damals neuartigen, auf Ethernet basierten PROFINET erstmals in einer internationalen Norm platziert!
The PNO was and is a technology driver! As early as the 1990s, the members of the working groups/specialist committees developed joint solutions to problems and were thus able to exert a decisive influence on the consistent further development of the technology. Additional economic and technological benefits are achieved through the extensive range of services in the areas of marketing, technology and training.
The first test laboratories for PROFIBUS were established in 1992. Certification of the PITLs was necessary in order to guarantee open communication standards and interoperability in the long term. Fieldbus devices had to be able to communicate securely with each other - regardless of which manufacturer they came from!
The integration of PROFIdrive e.V. into the PNO began as early as 1994, because bus systems were also needed in the drive sector. The point-to-point connections were far too slow - with PROFIdrive we also wanted to satisfy the growing need for information.
On 1 November 1995, all RPAs officially merged in Düsseldorf, Germany to form the international umbrella organisation PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) - still without PROFINET!
By 1995, PROFIBUS had established itself as the market leader in Europe and the number of members was also growing - Krohne was officially welcomed as the 250th member!
The PNO is increasingly assuming the role of the leading international industry association for automation technology and celebrated its 10th birthday with Prof Dr Heinz Riesenhuber, former Federal Minister for Research and Technology.
The 1998 standard (IEC 61158), in which all fieldbuses were to be integrated, marked the end of the international „fieldbus war“ and a breakthrough in the form of a compromise between the most important players (including the Fieldbus Foundation, Fisher Rosemount, ControlNet International, PNO and Siemens)! Based on this experience, the first version of the then new Ethernet-based PROFINET was placed in an international standard for the first time!
1989 - 1994
Die PNO-Geschichte begann mit dem Auftrag des Forschungsministeriums für das „Verbundprojekt Feldbus“, an dem 20 Institutionen mit einer Förderung von rund 10 Mio. DM beteiligt waren, wobei die Zusammenarbeit unterschiedlicher, im Wettbewerb zueinanderstehender Unternehmen als Konzept noch relativ neu war! Es sollte ein offener Kommunikationsstandard zu Zeiten von Brief, Fax und Diskette entwickelt werden, bei dem die „Übertragungsschnelligkeit“ von ein bis zwei Tagen pro Lieferung eine zusätzliche Herausforderung darstellte. Der inhaltlichen Arbeit tat das keinen Abbruch, gedanklich war man bereits in einer anderen Welt. Und so kam es zum Abschluss des Verbundprojektes zur Gründung der der PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation e.V. (PNO) in Frankfurt a. M. am 11. Dezember 1989. Gründungsmitglieder der PNO waren ABB, AEG, FhG-IITB, FZI, Honeywell, IRT/RWT Aachen, Klöckner-Moeller, Landis & Gyr, LPR München, Phoenix Contact, Schleicher, Siemens, Softing, Tesch, ZVEI – und es sollten noch viele nationale sowie internationale Mitglieder folgen!
Bereits 1990/1991 wird PROFIBUS DIN-Norm. Beginnend mit der PNO wurden auch in der Schweiz, Frankreich, China und den USA v.a. ab 1992 internationale Nutzerorganisationen gegründet, was die Basis für den Zusammenschluss aller RPA´s zum internationalen Dachverband PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) darstellt. In den neunziger Jahren gab es zudem zahlreiche konkurrierende Feldbussysteme auf dem Markt. Diese Phase bezeichnete man als „Feldbus-Krieg“. Schnell wurde klar, dass ohne Standard kein Markterfolg stattfinden kann.
In Europa konkurrierten seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre vor allem zwei Feldbussysteme miteinander: Das französische FIP-System und der PROFIBUS.
Um diesem internationalen Wettbewerb aber auch der nationalen Konkurrenz, wie Interbus, standhalten zu können, musste die noch junge PNO professionalisiert werden - die Geschäftsstelle nahm ihre Arbeit 1994 mit zunächst 2 Mitarbeitern unter der Geschäftsführung von Michael Volz auf und hat die Aufgabe der Verkaufsförderung durch Öffentlichkeitsarbeit (u. a.: Messebeteiligungen, Informationen für Fachzeitschriften, Werbe- u. Informationsmaterial)
The PNO story began with a commission from the Ministry of Research for the "Joint Fieldbus Project", in which 20 institutions were involved with funding totalling around DM 10 million, whereby co-operation between different companies in competition with each other was still a relatively new concept! An open communication standard was to be developed in the days of letters, faxes and floppy discs, with the "transmission speed" of one to two days per delivery posing an additional challenge. This did not detract from the content of the work; mentally we were already in a different world. And so, at the end of the joint project, the PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation e.V. (PNO) was founded in Frankfurt am Main on 11 December 1989.
The founding members of the PNO were ABB, AEG, FhG-IITB, FZI, Honeywell, IRT/RWT Aachen, Klöckner-Moeller, Landis & Gyr, LPR Munich, Phoenix Contact, Schleicher, Siemens, Softing, Tesch, ZVEI - and many more national and international members were to follow! PROFIBUS becomes a DIN standard as early as 1990/1991. Starting with the PNO, international user organisations were also founded in Switzerland, France, China and the USA from 1992 onwards, which formed the basis for the merger of all RPAs into the international umbrella organisation PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI).
In the 1990s, there were also numerous competing fieldbus systems on the market. This phase was known as the "fieldbus war". It quickly became clear that no market success could be achieved without a standard. In Europe, two fieldbus systems in particular have been competing with each other since the early 1990s: the French FIP system and PROFIBUS. In order to withstand this international competition, as well as national rivals such as Interbus, the still young PNO had to be professionalised - the office began its work in 1994 with initially two employees under the management of Michael Volz and and has the task of promoting sales through public relations work (including participation in trade fairs, information for specialistic journals, advertising and information material).
