PROFINET Media Redundancy Guideline

PROFINET

Description:

This guideline describes the media redundancy solutions and basic mechanisms for PROFINET network setups in the field of automation applications.

PROFINET provides two media redundancy solutions, namely the “Media Redundancy Protocol” (MRP) as non-seamless protocol, and the “Media Redundancy for Planned Duplication” (MRPD), as seamless media redundancy concept.

MRP is the basic redundancy protocol for PROFINET and must be applied when PROFINET network ring structures are in operation. MRP is sufficient for standard real-time PROFINET communication. MRPD is needed in addition when transferring fast isochronous real-time (IRT) PROFINET control data.

System redundancy is not in the scope of this guideline and is only mentioned when it is necessary to understand the concept of PROFINET Media Redundancy and its distinction to System Redundancy.

The vendors who provide products with Media Redundancy functionality are authorized to make electronic copies of the attached (ASCII readable) MIB files as well as to publish them on their websites.
