Security experts at PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) have developed a comprehensive security concept for automation, outlined in their specifications. This concept allows for the implementation of three PROFINET security classes, depending on your needs.

In Security Class 1, the GSDX format plays a key role. The GSDX file is created by packaging a GSDML file, along with its content, into a single container. To protect its integrity and authenticity, the GSDX file is then cryptographically signed, ensuring that any tampering or unauthorized changes can be detected.

The GSDX format serves several important purposes:

• Packaging files and their referenced resources into a single container.
• Validating the integrity and authenticity of the packaged files.
• Linking the file's origin to a specific vendor or publisher.
• Enabling easy integration of devices into an engineering tool.
